There are actually two species of fire ant in Stuart, Florida: Solenopsis invicta Buren, the red imported fire ant and less prevalent Solenopsis geminata (Fabricius), the tropical or native fire ant.

• Fire ants can be very aggressive, when disturbed the fire ant will latch on to its prey and sting repeatedly releasing the venom ‘solenopsin’. Although usually a moderate stinging pain, in some individuals intense allergic reactions could occur. If you are one of the individuals with a severe allergy, you could suffer anaphylaxis. • Fire ants go through complete metamorphosis in which the life cycle from egg to adult takes between 22 and 38 days.
• Fire ants are creatures that form together around a queen to make colonies, helping and supporting one another. These colonies reside in nests dubbed ‘mounds’. Unlike other mound residing ant species (pharaoh ants, pyramid ants, etc) the fire ant does not enter directly through access points on the top of the mound. They actually enter through access tunnels that lead to the mound. This is another factor adding to the frustration of homeowners wondering why these insects are so resilient. 
• Fire ant colonies can have either one or multiple queens. Colonies with one queen are quite territorial and do not coexist well with other ants. Fire ant colonies with multiple queens are much more tolerant of other ants and can create colonies that support one another. These multiple ant colony systems require professional control as oftentimes a homeowner will destroy one colony just to find another a few feet away the next day.
